Detroit – January 27, 2025 – If 2024 was a roller coaster ride for labor and employment law, then 2025 promises to bring even more corkscrew twists for employers as numerous questions surround Michigan’s paid sick time and minimum wage laws, in addition to the impact on employment practices with the new administration’s potential change in policies. The attorneys at management-side labor and employment law firm Nemeth Bonnette Brouwer PC will discuss these sharp turns and sudden changes over the past year and examine what employers need to know to remain compliant in 2025 at the firm’s long-running signature educational series Raising the Bar—scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, at the MSU Management Education Center in Troy.
Raising the Bar presenter Partner Terry Bonnette foresees a heightened importance for businesses to stay on top of the ever-changing landscape of employment law.
“What is clear is that employment law will continue to change at a rapid pace. As we saw in 2024, the Michigan Supreme Court declared adopt and amend to be unconstitutional, effectively making two ballot initiatives on paid sick time and minimum wage the law of the State—even though those ballot initiatives were never approved by Michigan voters,” Bonnette said. “Currently, the State Legislature is again debating amendments to those statutes. Looking to the Federal level, we already see the new administration rolling back the prior administration’s executive orders. It will be interesting to see how the new perspective will play out at the administrative agencies and the impact that will have on private employers. All of these resulting outcomes will have a substantial impact on how employers in Michigan need to proceed to stay compliant with the law.”
Raising the Bar topics that will be addressed in this session include:
- The impact of the new administration on overtime, non-competes, and independent contractor status
- Emerging trends in Artificial Intelligence
- The future of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policies
- Expanding/contracting protections for transgender employees
- The new NLRB’s impact on campaign speech, handbook policies, scope of concerted activity, captive audience speeches, recognition upon showing of support, unilateral action, and confidentiality/non-disparagement agreements
- Supreme Court, EEOC, and litigation updates
- Q & A opportunities
Raising the Bar will be held on Wednesday, February 26, at the MSU Management Education Center, 811 West Square Lake Road, Troy, 48098. Registration and breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The program will run from 9 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. with one 15-minute break.
